We’ve all seen websites that are literally plastered with AdSense ads. The question is, is this the most effective way to earn money with AdSense? Google allows you to place 3 regular ad blocks and 1 link unit on each page. However, it is not always wise to use all of the allowed advertising units on each page. Using less ad units could actually earn you more money. Why? Because the higher paid ads will most likely be shown on the page, rather than sharing space with the lower paying ads.
The best way to know for sure how many ad units to use on your website is to test. You can set up custom channels for each advertising unit to see which are performing the best. You may want to set up the maximum allowed ad units to test this, or you can try one of the following variations.
If you want to include only one AdSense unit, generally the large rectangle ads above the fold will do the best. In fact, just having one ad sense unit above the fold may be the best strategy for maximizing AdSense revenue.
If you want to use two ad units, there are several variations. Some webmasters place two large rectangles either one on top of the other or side by side. This is quite aggressive but may result in a good click through Another way of implementing two AdSense units is to use a large rectangle ad above the fold and a skyscraper ad unit in the left or right sidebar. Finally, you can place the large rectangle ad unit above the fold and another advertising unit at the bottom of your content.
Instead of two units you can incorporate three ad units in various way, using the hot spot above the fold, the sidebar, bottom of the page, and perhaps incorporating another unit within your content.
Finally you can incorporate an ad link unit. These work best when they blend in and appear to be part of your navigation system. You can place an ad link unit across the top, in the sidebar,or even at the bottom of the page.
The placement of your advertising units will play a big role in how much money you earn from AdSense. Just remember, sometimes less is more. You need to set up custom channels on your pages and test to find what works best on your particular website.
